Arts integration is an approach to push forward student learning in a way that makes young adults think creatively, work collaboratively and master the standards that are required of them in a way that will last far beyond the test. Arts integration can help students become more engaged in their learning, more excited to come to school and more interested in their everyday success.

As an arts integration specialist, my goals are to: 

  • Empower students and teachers by the use of Arts Integration

  • Demonstrate student growth through data with the implementation of Arts Integration strategies

  • Support teachers by engaging in professional development around Arts Integration

  • Grow teachers understanding of arts integration by forming teams where teachers can collaborate, learn from and engage with, while implementing this new approach

  • Push student learning to the highest level

Below are a list of ideal qualities that I would work towards as an Arts Integration Specialist in your school or district. 

​

LOOK-FORS: ​

  • Standards being taught AND assessed in both content and art area equitably 

  • A classroom that is inviting and safe for student engagement and learning 

  • Objectives are posted and verbalized for students throughout a lesson

  • Differentiation provided and supported for ALL students

  • Students and teachers supporting each others learning

  • Wondering - Is this an arts class? A math class? A reading workshop? A science lesson?

  • Student work, showcasing the mastering of the standards in both the core content and the arts area

BEHAVIORS: 

  • Collaboration on all levels - students, teachers, students and teachers, grade levels

  • Students are engaged, students talking, asking questions, giving feedback, wondering, problem solving

  • Students leading the classroom with their thinking and ideas, while teachers are pushing students with questions and supporting their learning 

  • Happy, engaged teachers and students working together in JOYFUL learning

EXPECTATIONS: 

  • All teachers will participate in Professional Development in arts integration throughout the year 

  • All teachers will collaborate with other teachers during the year to discuss challenges, successes and struggles as they navigate through arts integration lessons

  • Students will support other students with the language of learning 

  • Engagement with and in the community to support lessons, student learning and community collaboration
